See the highlights: Places, centers and the periphery

If you weren’t among the lucky participants at last year’s municipal place branding conference, Kommunebranding15, – fear not as a handful of select talks will be made available online in the coming months. To kick things off, have a peak at some of the many highlights from the conference in the video below.

The founder and chairman of the International Place Branding Association and esteemed place branding expert, Robert Govers, delivered a presentation and gave the keynote talk. Robert Govers delivered a strong argument as to why place branding is based on actions and not on appearances, and why it’s about collaboration and not competition. The keynote referenced several interesting international cases like Amsterdam Beach and the establishment of the International Financial Court of The Hague and how they helped solidify the brands of the two.

Juliana Engberg, the Programme director for Aarhus 2017, shared her thoughts on creating powerful place brands through culture and aesthetics through a sound and thorough, yet humorous, breakdown of the story Aarhus can and should tell.

Citizen involvement is a hot topic for many public organizations and institutions. Kasper Møller Hansen, professor and researcher at University of Copenhagen, argued that citizen involvement is often, mistakenly, regarded as a goal in and of itself. Instead, Kasper Møller Hansen argued that it should be used as a mean to achieve something greater.

Horsens has been on an astonishing journey from a prison city to a city highly regarded for it’s many experiences, including countless concerts with international heavy weights like Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Bruce Springsteen. Peter Sørensen, Mayor of Horsens, provided an inside view and shared the municipality’s experiences with the participants.

Stagis’ own CEO and founder Nikolaj Stagis also gave a talk on how municipalities have to find, and focus on, their authentic strengths. Drawing on a range of different cases, Nikolaj Stagis made the point that doing so, enables places otherwise considered to be in the periphery to establish an image of being at the center of a cause they choose to stand for.

Stagis A/S hosts the annual Danish conference on place branding for municipalities, “Kommunebranding”. The most recent event took place on November 27 2015 in the City Hall of Aarhus. In addition to inspirational talks, the events also include discussions and workshops. In past years a host of various national and international speakers have given talks on their particular field of expertise or experiences to a both knowledgable and engaging crowd, including an amazing talk from brand guru Wally Olins on differentiation in 2013 and a talk from Morten Østergaard in 2014, who was Minister of the Interior at the time.

We hope to see you at future events like our recurring re:garding events, a series of inspirational talks, or at our annual place branding conference, Kommunebranding16, in November.
